How to create Meta Tags for your website

If you want to have a better ranking in search engines all you need to do is add a few magical “Meta Tags” to your web pages, especially the index page. All search engines use meta tags; meta description, meta keywords and meta title to find your business on the Internet. However, this is not a guarantee to be on the top of the listing.

I have seen a lot of websites do not have the necessary meta tags. If you build your site yourself using a WYSIWYG editor or using a custom website builder, you will probably have no idea how to insert meta tags in your web pages. Even some professional web designers do not insert the right meta tags in their customers websites. So how do you put meta tags in your web pages?

What are meta tags? Meta tags are information inserted into the “head” of your pages. You will not see meta tag information on web pages in the browsers as they are hidden in the code. However, if you know how to view the web page source you will see meta tags code in the view source of web pages. This way you can view your competitor’s keywords and title. The meta tags information are used by search engines to find certain keywords or phrases in your web pages when users type them in their chosen search engines.

Let’s see the most common meta tags code in a website. The code below is copied from my website meta tags:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">

<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0">
<title>Cheap Website Design | Cheap Web Design | Cheap Website Design Perth | Cheap Web Design Perth</title>
<meta name=“description” content=“Limited budget! Get cheap web design, cheap website design in Perth WA Australia. Get complete 5 pages website for just $300! CALL TODAY: 0402 142 559.” />
<meta name=“keywords” content=“Budget, Budget website, Budget Websites, Budget Web Design, Budget Website Design, Budget Website Perth, Budget Web Design Perth, Budget Website Design Perth, Cheap Website, cheap web design, cheap website design, cheap web design perth, cheap website design perth.” />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../css/style.css" media="all" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../css/responsive.css" media="only screen and (max-width : 480px)" />
</head>

Every page in your website, whether a static html page or a database driven page such PHP or ASP, must begin with the above codes, otherwise your website will not be displayed correctly in the browser.

As you can see from the above example, the beginning of the page is the DOCTYPE declaration followed by <head>tag and it ends at </head>. The meta tags must be inserted inside the “opening” <head> and “closing” </head> tags. Shown in the example are description, keywords, title, etc…You do not have to put any other meta tags such as distribution, classification, author, subject etc.. You can insert as many as meta tags as you like for example, author, subject, classification, date, language etc but this is not essential. You must insert the most essential meta tags in your website in order for the search engine to find your website. The most essential meta tags are the title tag, the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.

The title tag

The html title tag goes in between the “opening” <title> and “closing” </title> tags. The title of you website is crucial. The text you use in the title tag is one of the most important factors in how a search engine may decide to rank your website. If you do not put the right title you will not be found in search engines and any other business directories. Make sure that the title of your website describes your business rather than simply mentioning the name of your business. The title of your website is what appears at the very top of your web browser’s window – it is not what appears on the front page of your website. Many search engines pay special attention to the words in your website’s title when they index your website. Below is my website title:

<title>Cheap Website Design | Cheap Web Design | Cheap Website Design Perth | Cheap Web Design Perth</title>

If you type some of these keywords or phrases you will see my website on Google. You might wonder why I did not put my business name – Desena Web Design and Maintenance in the title? This is because I am targeting budget web design and cheap web design keywords and whereas my business name is unknown.

The meta description tag

The description meta tag is used by the search engine to create a summary description of your website. When an Internet user is browsing through a list of search results, the summary description from the meta tag appears under the title of each web page.

This is the meta description of my website:

<meta name=“description” content=“Limited budget! Get cheap web design, cheap website design in Perth WA Australia. Get complete 5 pages website for just $300! CALL TODAY: 0402 142 559.” />

You can only put 200 to 250 characters in the description meta tag as only a small portion of this amount may be displayed.

The meta keywords tag

The most relevant keywords must be included in the title. For example, my business name is Desena Web Design and Maintenance but I did not put this as a title for my website because I am targeting the keywords: budget website design perth and budget web design perth. If you type these keywords on Google my website will come up on the first page. So you need to think about what are the keywords that people might use to find your products and services on the internet.

These are the keywords of my website:

<meta name=“keywords” content=“Budget, Budget website, Budget Websites, Budget Web Design, Budget Website Design, Budget Website Perth, Budget Web Design Perth, Budget Website Design Perth, Cheap Website, cheap web design, cheap website design, cheap web design perth, cheap website design perth.” />

In conclusion, remember that there are three important meta tags that you must insert into your web pages; meta description, meta title and meta keywords, and any other meta tags such as robots, classification, rating, author, publisher, subject etc…
